Do you play board games as a family? Do you like playing games that are different? If you answered yes then What’s That Smell is the game for you. I was aware what the game was all about when asked would we like to review it. Neil and the kids however didn’t have a clue. I took great pleasure in telling them what the game was all about when we sat down to play.
What’s That Smell is a game of guessing. You need 2-6 players to play this game. Its recommended or age 14+ but Jack is 10 and enjoyed it but I would agree its a more teenager adult game and not for the younger ones. It’s easy to play and one person is the Stinkpin throughout the game, they tally points and use the app for game play, although the app is optional and you can play without it. We decided to play without as game time is electronics free time for everyone in our house.
Each person needs a card holder, scorecard and whiff strip to start. When you are all ready each player selects a whiff card from the pile. You open the card and place in your holder only revealing the smelly part. When the stinkpin says you use your whiff strip and wipe it across the smelly part once. Be sure not to rub and rub as that will damage your cards and limit future play life.
Once the time is up (30, 45 or 60 seconds) you then write down you answers on the scorecard. You write what you think the smell is and what smell category you think it belongs to along with your funniest memory or association of what the smell triggers, it might get you some bonus points. Once everyone has finished you pass the card around the table and start again.
Once you have all completed each card then you can begin to tally the points. Below is what the scoring is:
5 points for correct smell guess
1 point for correct smell category
2 points for the funniest smell association (this is decided by the group)
You can also get 1 extra point if you smell guess matches the popular answer in app if you are using it.
If you have a tie then you can do a smell off. You select a random whiff card and have 15 seconds to guess what the smell is and this goes on till you have a winner.
Being the What’s That Smell champion means you then get to choose a player to endure 3 big whiffs of an ultimate smell of your choice. They are below and believe me when I say they stink.
We have had such a laugh playing this game. Neil was retching when he lost and had to whiff the diaper blowout he was never any good with the twins nappies. This is a great party night game when you have friends and family round who have never played before. Some of the cards didn’t smell like what they described in my opinion and some are super gross. It does make you laugh though at all the reactions.
You can buy What’s That Smell from all good toy shop as well as places like Argos and of course Amazon. I have added the Amazon link below for you.
