We have had a few Scalextric sets over the years but the boys have never played with one before. Given the chance to try out the My First Scalextric of course I said yes. I certainly made the right decision because the twins love it.
We opened the set and as with any reviews I do with the boys they sit nicely whilst I take some pictures. We got all the pieces out and took a quick peak at the instructions. Having had Scalextric sets before I was happy to just put the set together after a quick glance. The instructions do tell you exactly which piece goes where so you can make the track very easily. The track pieces all slot together but do be very gentle with them. This is something an adult needs to do I know the boys would never be able to click it together themselves. Over time though with some practice they will be able to build this set with their eyes closed. You have to be gentle but firm to make sure it’s fastened together tightly. There are metal stripes that run through the track which must all be connecting for it to work.
As the boys get a little bigger and used to playing I would hope they can learn to build the track themselves and move onto bigger tracks. The My First Scalextric is compatible with the Micro Scalextric range so you can add to your track (we have a micro track already so can’t wait to extend it as time goes on). This is a great set to start them with and teach them the basics and how it works. The My First Scalextric set makes a figure 8 with a bridge section when built.
You get two cars and two controls with the set one Yellow and one Red. They are wired which is good in our house because it means no walking off or taking to bed and getting lost. To power the My First Scalextrix you plug the set into the mains so you will need a plug socket or extension lead close by.
Both Jack and Kaitlin enjoyed playing as well and showing the boys what to do. This house can be extremely competative at times so you can imagine how that all turned out. You get additional metal pieces for the underside of the car should you need them. We had to explain to the boys that those are what make it work so they didn’t mess with them. They can be temperamental when messed with we have worked that out over the years so we explained about this from the start with the boys so we didn’t have any issues further down the line.
The cars go really fast and we had to teach the boys about pressing the button slowly. They got the hang of going slow and fast after just a few laps. The My First Scalextric set costs around £30 which is a good price for what you get. It’s a great starter track for smaller people and they can have lots of fun and learn how to use it themselves. The boys have been learning about changing speed and how the cars move. All games can be educational and fun at the same time.
