Recently we have found out Jack has dyslexia it was a confirmation of what we have believed for some time. We have been working very hard with him at home and he now has a tutor once a week to work on his English and Maths. He is actually really good at maths and has a whole head full of knowledge. He comes out with the most amazing pieces of information when you least expect it. What he struggles to do though is get that information out in a presentable format like a written story or piece of text.
We have been working extremely hard on spellings and hand writing but we are not teachers. I am not very good at English myself so do struggle when it comes to all the phonics and comprehension activities. We have searched the internet for help and advice and asked the school teachers. The problem you are faced with as a parent is that there are just so many apps, games and websites to choose from you don’t know which one is best. That’s were Education Quizzes comes in.
What we have discovered on our journey is to adapt our teaching style to what works for Jack not what the rest of the class are doing. He learns in a very different way when it comes to spelling and English than his peers. We have discovered this is through a low working memory and we have been advised to over learn things with him. This is when a website like Education Quizzes helps parents like us. Jack loves technology and if he sees it as games and fun he learns so much more and it sticks far quicker. We have found doing word games and spelling with games helps.
When asked would we take a look at the Education Quizzes website I wasn’t sure what to expect. I immediately went looking for quizzes that would help Jack to see if they could help his learning. I came across various quizzes in relation to spelling, phonics etc. Below you can see what you can expect a quiz to look like. The quizzes have all been created by teachers so you have the confidence they are teaching the correct level for his age group. The below is for IE letter combination words.
The website doesn’t only cover KS2 it covers from KS1 all the way up to GCSE level. There is even a section on special subjects that get covered in Topic lessons in class.
For me as a parent who feels helpless and un sure what level Jack is working towards I have found these quizzes really useful to help me focus his learning at home. If you are not a home educator and you want to compliment their learning at school it can be daunting to even know were to begin and what the curriculum is for their age range.
Education quizzes allows you to understand what your child is working towards and allows you to compliment their learning and also focus on areas of difficulty like we are. You can subscribe to Education Quizzes for a cost of £9.95 a month. It can be cancelled at any time though so is great if you need to do a few months of focused learning. Schools can also access the educational quizzes website and get a huge reduction on cost with each subscription from as little as £2 per child.
I think this is certainly something which will help me to help Jack over the coming months with his Dyslexia and learning new strategies toward learning for him.
This does look really useful and packed full with quizzes and support.
