I have always wanted to go to America and never thought I would ever get the chance. That was until last year when we went to Las Vegas. I always thought the cost was way more than I could ever afford. When looking into Las Vegas I quickly realised that if you are organised and willing to do your research you can actually get some really good bargains.
We have decided when we are 40 we want to do an American road trip and visit lots of different places stopping for a few nights in each place. There are lots of things we would like to see as well as the obvious ones like New York, Washington and so on. I am going to cover the places we would like to visits Augusta and Charlotte are our first two.
Augusta – A city in Georgia Near South Carolina – Nearest Airport Hartsfield–Jackson Atlanta International Airport.
Augusta is famous for Golf and the Masters which takes place there every year in April. Neil loves to watch golf and has been known to play over the years. It’s notoriously difficult to get tickets for the Masters and although I would love to take him I don’t think I will ever be able to pull it off. But I will try. To get tickets you have to register on the Masters website usually before June the previous year. This is to show an interest in the small amount of tickets they have for Practice Rounds and Daily Tournament tickets. The cost is $75-$115 per ticket. So fingers crossed we get selected when we organise our trip in a few years.
The Augusta Museum of History has lots of exhibitions and they have two in particular that we would like to take a look at and they are the Masters Golf History and James Brown the King of Soul. It will be great to take in a bit of the history and learn more about Augusta and the Masters. You are not allowed to visit the course itself unless you have a ticket for the tournament. It’s a seriously private club.
When planning we need to consider places to stay in Augusta as we are taking the kids with us. We need to make sure their needs will be catered for as they will be 16, 13 and the twins 8 if all goes to plan. They are good kids and love food so I have no issues with catering for their food choices in Augusta. Las Vegas can be difficult to keep children entertained so a good hotel for families will be and important factor for us.
Charlotte – Largest City in State of North Carolina – Nearest Airport Charlotte Douglas International Airport.
Charlotte has a very military vibe to it and that is reflected at the airport when you land. It is a joint civil and military airport. Charlotte is home to 4 bases our of the 5 military services of America so you can see why there is a military vibe to it. This will please the boys no end as they are all military mad.
Charlotte is another sporty city we would love to visit as it is home to the NASCAR hall of fame. We love motor racing as do the boys and it would be great to go and learn a little bit about the history of NASCAR.
The highlight of Charlotte for me would be an NFL game. Carolina Panthers are based in Charlotte at Bank of America Stadium. I have always wanted to go and see a game and the kids would love this as they are all quite sporty.
As well as NASCAR and NFL there is also an awesome looking theme park called Carowinds. This would certainly tick the kids bucket list box that’s for sure. We just need to be organised when looking for places to stay in Charlotte so that public transport is easily accessible to all the places we want to visit.
Both Augusta and Charlotte have loads more things to see and do that I haven’t even touched upon. There are lots of trip guides and website with places to visit and things to do. So if you are planning a trip do your research before going. Don’t miss a great place to eat or visit just because you never checked.
Getting around America
You can fly between Atlanta and Charlotte very easily and the flight time is around 1 hour and 15 minutes and the flights are every hour or so. The planes in America are like people catching train in the UK. They are regular and when planned can be very reasonable in cost.
Make sure you come back and check out our next two cities on the list for our road trip.
