Unfortunately I had to spend 2 nights and 3 full days in hospital last this week. It was hard work and very tiring. Euan had been vomiting for about 6 days when we arrived at hospital after a GP referral on Wednesday morning. I was unprepared for what was to come. Euan was very poorly whilst Edward was full of steam and wanted to play. We thought it was just a sickness bug that was lingering.
I had thought I would be seen, prescribed some meds and sent home. I didn’t bank on 2 nights as an inpatient. It was strange because he was eating and drinking and was only sick for about 7-8 hours a day. The rest of the day he was bright alert well hydrated and playing.
After an hour my mum arrived to help out with Edward and support me with Euan and what the doctors were saying. It was really hard because by mid afternoon he had started to deteriorate and hug the sick bowl but nothing was coming up. He was so tired and sleepy and it was awful to see him like that.
Below is us sat in the waiting room having his biscuit. He didn’t want to sit on his bed and preferred it on the waiting room chairs. What ever made him comfortable was all that mattered.
Several hours after arriving and the doctors going back and forth trying to work out why he was being sick we saw the lead consultant from the children ward. He wasn’t convinced it was a gastro sickness bug based on the length of time he had been vomiting. He wanted us to stay in so they could monitor him and try some anti sickness medicine. What a shock that was.
I had nothing with me I was so annoyed as I am usually really organised at times like this. Luckily I have the best family support network around me who all came together to help. My dad had collected Kaitlin and Jack, my mum had taken Edward home and Kaitlin had prepared a bag for me and Euan. Within an hour of arriving on the ward we had all we needed.
In the Hospital
The nurse came to book us in and get us settled. She was so nice and very good with Euan who hates being prodded and poked. We administered the anti sickness medicine which was a battle as he didn’t like it. It was important he had it though. Then what I had feared happened he vomited everywhere about and hour after the medicine, it wasn’t working.
After being sick he settled and slept till about 11.30pm when he woke in a great mood and wanted toast and milk. He really enjoyed his slice of toast whilst watching Shaun the Sheep on TV. We settled down again to sleep about 2am and I was then woken at 5am to the sound of sick mummy sick. He hugged a sick bowl but again nothing came out. This went on for hours till eventually at 9am he was sick. Again he settled and slept for several hours.
At this point I knew we would be in for another night and made arrangement to go home and take a shower and get more supplies for us. I brought back a pillow for Euan along with some of his favourite snacks and clean clothes. We stayed another night, feeling sick, playing, eating, drinking and feeling sick again. The doctors now wanted to scan Euan’s stomach to see what was going on. It was an ultra sound and for the most part he lay still and allowed them to look what was going on. Great I thought we will find out what is happening.
The doctor started to walk toward us and my heart sank, I awaited the words coming from his mouth………. The scan shows everything is ok. Sigh of relief it was nothing serious but what could it be. The Doctors had all spoke together and made a decision to discharge him with some anti reflux medication. If the sickness continued I was to go back to the Children’s Hospital in Manchester to get further investigation done as they could do no more for him at that hospital.
I was relieved to be going home but worried about the next few days. Well what happened over the weekend and gets me to Tuesday is just unreal.
Friday night we arrived home from hospital to news Edward had been sick twice, oh no I thought not Edward as well. We settled the boys and all was fine overnight.
Saturday went as planned like a normal day all settled and relaxed, Euan was tired and sleepy and Edward had a nap later on. We just had a quiet relaxed day and tried food little and often with both boys.
Sunday morning all seemed fine everyone was playing and then like a steam train both boys hugging the sick bowl. Edward was sick twice and Euan just felt sick. I settled the boys to bed and hoped for a quiet night. How wrong was I first Jack vomited everywhere, I cleaned up and tucked him up then 1am mum I’ve been sick again. Not only was he sick but it was over my washing pile. The washing machine was broken so off to the bath they all went. I cleaned up and settled him down.
Monday morning at 2am Neil says I feel sick and he then proceeded to vomit till around 5am. My house had descended into chaos. Time to get up for work and school and the twins seem fine Neil and Jack are both ill and I feel sick. Luckily the washer man came nice and early and I could get on with the mountains of washing (4 loads washed and dry). Monday afternoon Edward is sick again.
HELP PLEASE. Does anyone have any suggestions how I can shift this horrendous sickness bug that seems to be lurking in my house. I have cleaned and tripled cleaned the whole house with anti bacterial wipes and hot soapy water. What else can I do? This sickness bug is just horrible and nasty.
