The twins have been learning how to play games together recently. This has been under the advice of their speech therapist to help the with social skills and interaction. We have been playing games that involve them taking turns so they have to wait and watch. When asked would we like to try out Don’t Rock The Boat I couldn’t say no. It’s perfect for what I am trying to achieve with them.
Don’t Rock The Boat says recommended for age 5+ on the box but the twins are only 3 and both were able to grasp the concept and play the game. I would say if they they were a little older though they would proably be a lot better at it. The game is all about balancing and learning how gravity works. We had loads of fun as I taught the twins to use only the middle of the boat as that way it meant they could place more without it tipping. Older children I would encourage using all the boat as its harder to balance. The main thing for us was that the took turns and learnt to share and wait.
The aims of the game is to place all 16 pirate penguins on the boat without tipping it over. Sounds easy but it gets hard once you have had a few turns each. You can place your pirates directly on the ships deck or you can place them on the sails. I found when playing it with Kaitlin and Jack the sail was a good place to go and made it very competitive.
With Edward and Euan we stook to the centre ship deck this allowed them to take more turns each before the ship capsized. Its been a great way of teaching them to play nicely together and share, They counted the pirate penguins out between them, took turns at placing them and also cheering the winner.
With the twins its all about short bursts of games to keep the attention going. Dont Rock The Boat is super quick to set up and put away which is perfect for little ones. You literally just have to balance the boat on the cone divide the pirates and away you go.
We would highly recommend this game for any family with young children. The price is around £10-15 which for hours of fun and to help them learn to play I think is very reasonable.
You can purchase the game from most toy shop or even order it and have it delivered straight to you door with Amazon.
I have since taken a look at other Universal Games and they do a huge range of what I call take turn games and I know I will be investing in a few more to help the twins with their speech and social delay.
