Our 1st Rugby League game of the season away to Limehurst Lions
Limehurst Lions 9 – 13 Oldham St Annes
What a game again today we had our first Rugby League game of the season and we played Limehurst Lions again this week away at their ground. After last week’s win we had to prove it was not a fluke and that we had the skill and determination to win again.
It was also mother day so all us Mum’s wanted our boys to do us really proud and I couldn’t be prouder of my boy captain for the day and scored two try’s for his grandad who also came to watch. Cheers to Homer for our chocolate bars you’re a top coach and do a brilliant job with the lads.
Now onto the rugby, well what a team game the lads played. I will say it again they really are a different team this season they are listening and playing together, they worked hard as a team and showed some great skill especially Alfie in his tackling technique he really is an example of how our tackles should be done. He also won Top tackler which I think was very well deserved he went for the legs every tackle even if the opponent was three times his size he wasn’t fazed at all. He will be a shining star on our team if he keeps playing like that. Look at him below making a run for it.
The game was a fast paced game but it was a good game to watch it wasn’t end to end which sometimes it can be, we kept them out a few times and then went the full length of the field to score a try. Great effort from the boys and a great rugby game to watch they worked hard to make sure we won the game 13 – 9.
Some of the newer players had some great chances and I saw an improvement in them from last week on the below picture you can see Harley really trying to get that ball down for a try only to be kept out. Great effort though and sure he will get one very soon. Check Harley trying his best to score below.
I was super proud of my jack for scoring 2 try’s and he is running much better than he was last season finding the gaps rather than straight forward into a wall of rugby players. The whole team are running better running forwards and not being scared of the tackle, Harry is doing much better we haven’t seen him run backwards this season and he is starting to find the gaps and run forwards so great effort Harry keep it up.
The game didn’t go off without a little scuffle though and boys being boys in the sport of rugby it can get a bit heated but good sportsman ship was shown all round with the players coming of the field and any incidents being resolved with a shake of the hand. This is such a great thing to see and for me teaches the boys a very valuable lesson, yes we are there to win but it’s not about fighting it about playing rugby and playing the game properly.
That nicely brings me onto asking you for your support in light of the recent news that they want to stop tackling in school rugby. Well what a ridiculous idea that is, speaking as a parent having watched my boy train and play since the age of 5 I know now it is a very safe sport to play yes you may get injuries and sometimes get hurt but the coaches are brilliant and teach the boys how to tackle safely and make sure that un safe tackles are explained and dealt with accordingly although they are very few and far between.
We at Mumdadplus4 and Oldham St Annes Under 8’s would love it if you could please sign the petition below to get this in front of parliament for further debate where I hope they make the right decision because rugby will become nothing more than a game of tig and pass otherwise not what the sport actually is.
Alfie – Top Tackler
Jacob – Most improved
Blake – Man of the match
Homer (aka Steven Leyland): First off all would like to wish all u mums a happy mothers and thanks for everybody turning out in the weather, well to today’s game every single kid on that team listened to everything we said and did their job and got stuck in, the tackling was outstanding on our own line especially because they had some big lads but we showed passion and big heart and a little bit of aggression to stop them, I no myself, paul & gaz no we have turned a corner with the kids attitude and its paying off as u can see on field and off it,well done to Mom,most improved and best tackler Blake, Jakob and especially alfie the terrier hague who has taken to rugby like a duck to water and showed why u don’t have to be the biggest kid around to play this game, u all did ya mams proud today kids,#Green&gold Army. COYS
Paul: Well! Being mother’s day it was certainly the day to make their mums proud. And they certainly did that and their dad’s and their grandparents. Brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles, cousins. But most of all themselves. There really isn’t much else I can say that homer hasn’t already said. Fantastic effort from all the boys today and looking at that and with the improvements we can make you can only think that we will be a force to be reckoned with. COYS.
Gaz: Another brilliant team performance today!! We could all tell how much the boys wanted it and the hard work is paying off. Each and every lad should give themselves a huge pat on the back after this morning! I’m definitely a proud coach and dad after today’s game..
