Feeding a family on a budget
I am sure most families can relate to the cost of food and feeding your family healthy food without it costing the earth.
Well here at mumdadplus4 we are going to try and help you do just that with meal plans and healthy cooking ideas. (Some naughty but nice ones too)
As a family of 6 and a mixture of ages it can be hard to prepare a healthy meal for us all to eat but I have learnt that planning the week’s meals in advance and sticking to it cuts down on the unhealthy snacking and importantly the cost.
We plan a week’s meals in advance and I then create a shopping list of what I will need to prepare those meals, this makes sure that I only buy what I need, I am also strict with myself and not taken in by the offers (which let’s face it aren’t really offers are they cause who needs 3 packets of biscuits just because they are buy 2 get one free lol!)
A typical week for us looks something like the below:
Monday – Pasta and homemade Bolognese sauce (with lots of hidden vegetables)
Tuesday – BBQ pulled pork sandwiches cooked in the slow cooker
Wednesday – Steak and veg pie cooked in slow cooker
Thursday – Vegetable Soup with shredded Beef
Friday – Salt and pepper chicken wings (adults) Homemade puff pastry pizza for kids
Saturday – Curry for the adults (slow cooker), fish fingers and chips with beans for the kids
Sunday – Roast chicken diner
We try to feed the twins the same meals we all eat but nights were its not suitable we will do them something separate but 99% of what we cook they can eat.
You will see mid-week I try to cook just one meal to make life easier and we can all eat together, weekends are so busy in our house so we tend to have different meals which then also allows us to have some adult time of an evening.
Fruit is always available in the house for the kids to snack on when they want to and I try to incorporate as many vegetables into their meals as I can but like most children today it’s not easy. The best thing I can recommend is a hand held blender as our vegetable soup it packed full and we just blend it smooth and also pasta sauces have all sorts in but we blend the sauce before adding the meat – Hidden vegetables blended always gets the thumbs up in this house.
